Ukutula — meaning "place of quiet" — is a lion conservation and research centre in the North West Province, about 90 minutes from Johannesburg. It is a working reserve rather than a walk-in attraction: every visit runs to fixed tour departure times in small groups, with advance booking required.
This guide covers the practical details guests ask about most — when tours depart, what the rules are, how to find the gate, and what to bring — so that on the day itself the only thing left to think about is the lions.
Lion Walk Safari - Ukutula Tours is operated by Capital Xperience, an independent booking and transport partner. The wildlife experiences and Ukutula accommodation take place at and are managed by Ukutula Lodge & Conservation Centre.
There is no general gate entry — your ticket is for a specific experience at a specific time. The morning slots are the most rewarding year-round: the lions are most active and it is cooler on foot. In summer (October–March), morning departures also let you avoid the midday heat and afternoon thunderstorms.
Combining experiences? The Walk + Predator Combo runs 08:00 or 14:00 and flows straight from the walk into the predator tour. If you book the walk on its own and want to add the Guided Predator Tour, choose walk times that pair cleanly with the 10:00 or 14:00 predator departures — the booking page shows live availability and suggests compatible times for your date.
Self-drive: N1 north from Johannesburg → N4 west towards Rustenburg/Brits → R512 turn-off → roughly 15 km to the signposted Ukutula entrance. The last stretch is tarred with short gravel sections — a normal sedan is fine, no 4x4 needed. Free parking is available at the gate; fuel and a last shop stop are easiest in Hartbeespoort or Brits.
Mobile signal is patchy past Hartbeespoort, so save the GPS coordinates (-25.521922, 27.673801) and your ticket offline before you set off. Aim to arrive 30–60 minutes before your slot so check-in and the safety briefing are unhurried.
Prefer not to drive? Private door-to-door return transfers run daily from Johannesburg, Pretoria, Sandton, Midrand, Fourways, OR Tambo and Lanseria, and can be added to any booking — your driver confirms pickup on WhatsApp the evening before.
Ukutula is open every day of the year, but visits run to fixed tour departure times rather than a general gate entry. Lion walks depart at 08:00, 09:00, 10:30, 15:00 and 16:00; the Guided Predator Tour runs at 10:00 and 14:00; the Walk + Predator Combo runs at 08:00 and 14:00; and the Waterhole Experience departs at 12:00. Arrive 30–60 minutes before your slot for check-in and the safety briefing.
No — advance booking is required. Tours run in small groups at fixed times and slots regularly sell out, especially on weekends and during school holidays. Guests who arrive without a paid booking cannot be guaranteed a place on a tour.
The lion walk is for guests aged 12 and older who are at least 1.5 m tall. Younger children are welcome on the reserve — the Guided Predator Tour and Waterhole Experience are family-friendly — and children on the predator portion are charged at a reduced child rate. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Wear closed walking shoes and neutral, muted clothing; stay with your guide and follow their instructions immediately; keep noise low and movements calm around the animals; never feed, touch or call the animals outside the guided walk; leave drones, pets and loud music at home; and stay inside designated areas. The rules exist for your safety and the animals' welfare — guests who cannot follow them are withdrawn from the activity without a refund.
Ukutula Lodge & Conservation Centre sits on the R512 between Hartbeespoort and Brits in the North West Province (The Farm Klipkop 411, JQ District, Brits 0250). The interactive map on this page shows the gate's GPS position: -25.521922, 27.673801. Save it offline before you leave — mobile signal is patchy past Hartbeespoort.
Allow 3–4 hours on the reserve for a single experience, or most of the day for the Walk + Predator Combo. With return transfers from Johannesburg the full day runs roughly 7–9 hours door to door.
Closed walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen, a warm layer in winter, water, a camera with a spare battery, and your booking reference plus ID for check-in at the gate. Cash or card is useful for the on-site curio shop and refreshments.
Day visitors should plan meals separately unless their selected package states that a meal is included — there are refreshments and guest areas on site, plus a curio shop. Overnight guests staying at the lodge have breakfast included with their chalet.
Getting here
Ukutula Lodge & Game Reserve is 120 km from Johannesburg (allow 2–2½ hours), 85 km from Pretoria and 165 km from OR Tambo International Airport, off the R512 near Brits. The last stretch is gravel, so add 30–45 minutes, plus 10–15 minutes from the gate to reception.

“What can I say except amazing! Walking alongside the lions was an exhilarating, once-in-a-lifetime experience, and petting the cheetah was incredible. Beyond the wildlife, the guides were exceptionally knowledgeable and immediately put us at ease. The facility is extremely clean, and the enclosures are spacious and dignified for the animals. I highly recommend visiting Ukutula to walk with the lions at least once in your life!”

“A once in a lifetime experience can only be achieved and comfortably enjoyed with dedicated staff members and ownership like what I observed at this park. I’m grateful to all for a wonderful 2 night stay. Mari, went above and beyond to fulfill a last minute request to enjoy the elephants at a nearby conservation park. I highly recommend at least at 2 night stay to enjoy the animals and amenities!”
