Ukutula is a private game reserve of roughly 260 hectares in the bushveld near Brits. Its name means 'place of quiet', and that calm is the point: open grassland, thorn trees and a slower pace only about 90 minutes from Johannesburg and Pretoria.
It is also a good stop for birders, with more than 130 bird species recorded on the property. Bring binoculars if you plan to stay overnight or arrive early.
The reserve is home to the Ukutula Conservation Centre and its biobank, which store genetic material and support research and education. They follow the IUCN 'One Plan Approach' to species conservation, which links work done in the wild with work done in managed care.
