What happens on the lion walk

You meet your handler at Ukutula Lion Park & Lodge in Brits, North West — about 75 minutes from Johannesburg. After a short safety briefing you walk out into open bushveld alongside the lions, on foot, with two experienced handlers guiding pace and distance. There are no vehicles, no fences between you and the animals, and no crowds: groups are kept small so everyone gets time for photographs and questions.

  • Safety briefing and handler introduction (~15 min)
  • Guided walk on foot with the lions (~45–60 min)
  • Photo time and conservation talk to close (~15 min)

Times, seasons and how long to allow

Walks run in the cooler parts of the day — early morning and late afternoon — because that is when the lions are most active. Allow around three hours on site if you are combining the walk with the predator tour, and add travel time in both directions. Winter mornings (May–August) are cold and clear, ideal for photography; summer afternoons can bring late thunderstorms, so earlier slots are safer.

Getting there from Johannesburg or Pretoria

Self-drive is straightforward on tarred roads via the N4 and R511, and there is free on-site parking. If you would rather not drive, add a private return transfer at checkout — we collect from Johannesburg, Sandton, Pretoria and OR Tambo hotels. Pickup is normally set well before your start time so you arrive relaxed; build in an extra 30 minutes on weekday mornings for traffic.

What to wear and bring

  • Closed walking shoes (no sandals)
  • Neutral, muted clothing — no bright colours
  • Hat, sunscreen and drinking water
  • Camera or phone — flash is not permitted
  • A warm layer for winter morning walks
  • Your booking reference (on your ticket)

Safety, ages and animal welfare

Handlers set the rules and they are not negotiable: stay in the group, no running, no crouching, and no children in the enclosures. Guests are briefed before every walk and the lions decide the route — walks are shortened or moved if the animals are not settled. Ukutula is a working conservation and research facility, and the walk is scheduled around the animals rather than the diary.
